Invalid traffic: what it is and how to avoid it

Published · 4 min read

Your AdSense traffic habits matter when seeking AdX through MCM. Learn what invalid activity is and how to avoid it.

If you use AdSense today, the quality of your traffic still matters when you seek AdX access. Invalid traffic, or IVT, includes ad impressions or clicks that do not reflect genuine user interest. It can trigger adjustments or account restrictions even when you did not intend to cause it.

Two broad categories

General invalid traffic

Known, easily identified non-human activity: search engine crawlers, monitoring tools, data-center traffic and declared bots. Ad platforms filter most of this automatically, and on its own it rarely threatens an account.

Sophisticated invalid traffic

Activity designed to look human: bots that mimic browsing, hijacked devices, hidden or stacked ads, and incentivized clicks. This is what platforms investigate closely, and what most often leads to enforcement.

Where it usually comes from

  • Purchased traffic. Cheap traffic packages frequently include bots, even when the seller promises otherwise.
  • Your own clicks. Clicking your own ads — even to "test" them — is invalid. So is asking friends or followers to click.
  • Incentive schemes. Rewarding visitors for viewing or clicking ads, directly or indirectly.
  • Accidental-click layouts. Ads placed next to navigation, download buttons or content that shifts as the page loads.
  • Attacks by others. Occasionally, a third party sends bad traffic to a site deliberately.

How to keep it away

  1. Only buy traffic from sources you can verify, and watch the results closely when you do.
  2. Never click your own ads. Use the preview or testing tools available in your current ad setup instead.
  3. Keep a clear gap between ads and anything clickable, and reserve space so the layout doesn't shift.
  4. Watch your analytics for sudden spikes, unusual geographies, or click-through rates far outside your normal range.
  5. If you see something suspicious, investigate the source and, if needed, block it — then document what you did.

If you think you've been affected

Act early. Identify the source in your analytics, stop or block it, and keep a short written record of what you found and what you changed. If an ad platform contacts you, a clear, factual explanation of the steps you took is far more useful than a general denial.

Why it matters when moving beyond AdSense

Traffic quality is one of the first things any partner looks at, because invalid traffic in a child account becomes the parent's problem too. A clean, consistent traffic record is one of the strongest signals an account can show.
