AdSense to AdX Timeline: Every Step and Its Waiting Time
Published · 8 min read
"How long does it take to go from AdSense to AdX?" has no single answer, because Google does not publish one. What Google does publish is the waiting time for each individual step: how long an invitation stays open, how long you have to verify your identity, how long a PIN letter can take, how long site review usually runs, and when payments go out. This guide puts those published windows on one page, in order, so you can see which steps block each other and which ones you can run at the same time.
These are Google's published windows, not a promise of total time. Your own path may be faster or slower.
The whole path on one page
| Step | What happens | Google's published window |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | AdSense account and Ad Manager network | Set time zone and currency before the first order (cannot be changed later) |
| 2 | MCM invitation from a parent | 90 days to accept or decline |
| 3 | Identity verification | 45 days to submit; processing up to 2 days |
| 4 | Address verification by mailed PIN | Typically 2 to 4 weeks to arrive; 4 months to enter it |
| 5 | Site review | Usually a few days, up to 2 to 4 weeks |
| 6 | Tags, ads.txt, Ad Exchange on, first payment | Revenue posted by the 2nd; payment toward month end; EFT in 4 to 10 days |
The rest of this guide walks through each step and what you can do to avoid delays.
Step 1: AdSense account and Ad Manager network
Google requires an AdSense account to sign up for Ad Manager. If you are reading this, you probably have one already. Make sure it is in good standing, because MCM requires active accounts in good standing.
If you will be a Manage Inventory child, you also need your own Ad Manager network, since Google uses it to identify you. Children without one are asked to create one during the invitation. Google's MCM guidance says Ad Manager allows only one account per publisher, so if you already have an AdSense, Ad Manager or AdMob account, the invitation should go to an email with Admin access in that existing account. A duplicate account can be disapproved, which is one of the most avoidable delays in the whole process.
Two settings deserve attention on day one: time zone and currency. Google says to set both before you create the first order, because they cannot be changed afterwards. There is no waiting period here, but getting them wrong cannot be undone later.
Step 2: the MCM invitation (90-day expiry)
Most AdSense publishers reach Ad Exchange through Multiple Customer Management (MCM), where a parent publisher invites you, the child, to a Manage Account or Manage Inventory relationship. If those terms are new, see How to Get Google AdX Access.
Once the invitation arrives, you have 90 days to accept or decline it. After that, your status changes to Expired. Google lets the parent resend an expired invitation, which starts a fresh 90-day period, so an expiry is an annoyance rather than a dead end. If an invitation never arrives, has the wrong email or shows an unexpected status, our guide to MCM invitation troubleshooting covers the usual causes.
Read the terms before you accept. With Manage Account, Google routes the agreed share of earnings to the parent automatically, and changing that share later means ending the agreement and accepting a new invitation.
After you accept, Google shows your readiness status to the parent as Ready, Not ready (onboarding steps still to complete, such as identity verification) or Inactive (for example, when an agreement ends or an invitation expires).
Step 3: identity verification (45-day window, processing up to 2 days)
Ad Manager asks publishers to verify who they are. Under Manage Account, the child completes identity verification with its own documents. Manage Inventory children onboarded after April 3, 2024 must complete both identity and address verification.
The key numbers:
- 45 days to submit your documents. If you miss the deadline, ads stop.
- Up to 2 days for Google to process them.
- Individuals use a government-issued photo ID. Businesses also submit registration documents.
The 45 days is a deadline, not a waiting time. Submitting on the first day is the easiest way to shorten your whole timeline. Have your documents ready before you start the form. Our identity verification guide explains the details.
Step 4: address PIN by post (typically 2 to 4 weeks)
Google verifies your address by sending a PIN in the mail. Google's Ad Manager help says the PIN is printed and sent several days after your account balance first reaches the verification threshold. PINs typically arrive within 2 to 4 weeks, but can take longer depending on where you live.
What to know:
- You can request up to three replacement PINs if the first one does not arrive.
- You have 4 months from the date the first PIN is generated to enter it. After that, Google stops serving ads through the account (reservation campaigns continue), and you will not be paid until verification is complete.
Check your address carefully before the letter is generated, because every replacement PIN means another wait for the post.
Step 5: site review (days, up to 2 to 4 weeks)
Each site you want to monetize is reviewed in Ad Manager under Inventory > Sites. Statuses are Needs attention (issues to fix, such as policy problems, low-value content or ads.txt ownership problems), Getting ready (under review) and Ready (approved and eligible to serve ads). Google says review "usually takes just a few days but could take up to 2-4 weeks."
The good news for your timeline: for MCM children, site review is a separate process and can be started while you are still completing readiness steps. You do not have to wait for identity verification to finish before your sites are reviewed.
Step 6: tags, ads.txt and switching on AdX, then the first payment cycle
Once your sites are Ready and your readiness steps are complete, the technical switch-over happens. Google's MCM setup guidance gives a clear order:
- Update ads.txt so it reflects the new relationship. Ad Manager calls ads.txt not mandatory but highly recommended. Google's AdSense help notes that ads.txt changes can take a few days to be picked up, and up to a month for sites with few ad requests, so do this early.
- Disable AdSense backfill in Ad Manager before enabling Ad Exchange.
- Do not enable Ad Exchange until all monetized sites are approved.
- Place the right tags. Under Manage Account you use your own tags. Under Manage Inventory you use the parent's tags.
Then comes the payment cycle. For earnings paid through your own Ad Manager account, Google's published timeline is:
- On the last day of the month, Google identifies accounts that have reached the payment threshold.
- By the 2nd of the next month, the previous month's revenue is posted to your Transactions page.
- Toward the end of that month, a payment line item is posted, showing the payment has been calculated.
- EFT payments arrive in your bank account within 4 to 10 days after that.
Google also notes that MCM payment information is ready around the 15th of the month. Under Manage Inventory, your inventory is monetized from the parent's network, so the timing of your payout depends on your contract with the parent. Ask about it before you accept the invitation.
Steps that run in parallel and steps that block each other
Not every step has to wait for the one before it. Knowing which ones overlap is the most practical way to keep your timeline short.
Steps that can run at the same time:
- Site review and MCM readiness. Google says site review can start while you complete readiness steps.
- Identity verification and site review. Submit your documents the day you accept, and let the review run alongside.
- ads.txt updates and everything else. Since crawlers can take days to see changes, update the file as soon as you know the seller lines.
Steps that block others:
- The invitation blocks everything MCM-related. Nothing moves until you accept it.
- Site approval blocks Ad Exchange. Google advises against enabling Ad Exchange until every monetized site is approved.
- Address verification blocks payment. If the PIN is not entered within 4 months, ads stop, and payments wait until verification is complete.
Things that cause the longest delays are usually avoidable: a duplicate account, an invitation sent to the wrong email, a missed identity deadline, a wrong postal address, or a site flagged "Needs attention" for issues that could have been fixed beforehand. The readiness checklist is built to catch those early.
Next step
The fastest path from AdSense to AdX is not a shortcut. It is a clean account, a site that is ready for review, and documents submitted on day one. Eligible publishers may receive an MCM invitation through our MCM partner network, subject to Google's policies, verification and site review. Check the requirements, then Get AdX access when you are ready.
